Hepatitis C Nurse Outreach in Clinic H
Viral Hepatitis Nurses are nurse consultants who work with patients in the community, general practice or hospital setting. They provide a link between public hospital specialist services and general practice, and give specialised support to general practitioners (GPs) to assist in the management of patients with hepatitis B or hepatitis C.
Clinic H is pleased to have a viral hepatitis C nurse on most Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm providing point of care testing for the detection of hepatitis C. Point of care testing requires only a drop of blood from a finger prick to enable a diagnosis of active hepatitis C, leading to commencement of treatment on the same day. For patients who have injected in the past and who have difficult venous access, Clinic H encourages patients at risk to use this service. Please call on Tuesday to confirm the availability of the nurse.
Clean Needle Program
The Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is a public health measure endorsed by the Minister for Health and aims to reduce the spread of blood born viral infections such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) among people who inject drugs (PWID) and the general community.
Clinic H offers pre packed sterile injecting equipment via a vending machine and provides a sharps waste disposal service for the return of injecting equipment.
The aim of providing sterile injecting equipment to people who inject drugs (PWID) is to prevent the shared use of injecting equipment which can lead to the transmission of blood -borne viruses. Equipment provided by the Needle and Syringe Program to people who inject drugs includes a variety of needles and syringes, alcohol swabs and sharps containers.
Take Home Naloxone (THN)
Naloxone is a lifesaving medication that reverses the effects of opioids and from 1 July 2022, will be free, without a prescription throughout South Australia.
Naloxone is available as an intranasal device (Nyxoid), and through intramuscular injection via ampoules or pre-filled syringe (Prenoxad).
Clinic H has a supply of THN either in the form of Nyxoid spray or Prenoxad injections via its dispensary. It also has information pamphlets on how to use the devices. If you are currently injecting opioids or know of people who do, please ask the staff for supplies.
